How will you make an impact in this role?
Global Supply Management (GSM) is responsible for helping Amex maximize the purchasing power of over $11B of third party spend. We provide strategic consultation to the business and provide end to end procurement services. We maximize the purchasing power of the Company to drive the best value from our supplier base which then frees up investment capacity for the Blue Box. GSM together with our business partners manages the supplier strategy for the Company, identifying and on-boarding new suppliers, realizing significant cost saves and revenue generation relating to working with Global Commercial Services and Global Merchant Services to increase billings and merchant coverage and ensuring an optimal user experience for Amex employees and suppliers.
Position Summary:
Strategic Sourcing and Business Enablement (SS&BE) is responsible for helping Amex maximize its purchasing power and meet enterprise sustainability priorities. This is a global role playing a pivotal role in partnering across categories to develop and grow relationships with business partners to understand objectives, key priorities, and identify opportunities to drive AXP climate ambition and grow diverse supplier engagements.
Your mission:
Join the newly established team within our procurement function that is leading the supplier engagement efforts across our ambition to deliver enhanced relationships with diverse suppliers and decarbonize our supply chain. This will be achieved through measurement, strategy development, and partnership with multiple business stakeholders and ESG advocacy groups. This global role will both lead and support core workstreams across all aspects of driving AXP’s diverse supplier and climate ambition.
Responsibilities will at a high level, include:
Program Management:
- Develop and grow strong relationships with business partners to gain business unit knowledge, understand goals, and identify issues and potential opportunities (e.g., influence requirements, advise business how to capture the most value from supplier relations); with a customer first mindset and strategy
- Develop robust communication plans for three distinct audiences (GSM, business unit colleagues, and suppliers) to increase awareness of, support for, and engagement with the Amex ESG Ambitions
- Stand up a robust data collection & reporting mechanisms (leveraging CDP) to monitor & track supplier emissions, climate maturities and that will provide regular updates to stakeholders across the business and senior management
- Develop strategic, forward thinking multi-year roadmap to maintain and grow spend with existing diverse suppliers and expand overall number of diverse suppliers within the Amex approved supplier list
- Guide the selection & mgmt. of systems and back-end data infrastructure for our emissions pipeline. Perform data mining, exploration, and analysis
- Prepare regular reports, dashboards and filters tailored to the different stakeholders on supplier climate data/commitments, program overall progress, and key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Maintain and refresh the tool as needed, pulling input from multiple sources incl. internal procurement tools, inputs from suppliers through procurement/business unit teams, SBTi website, annual CDP disclosures etc.
- Collaborate closely across the procurement team to engage suppliers in emission reduction initiatives, including setting and monitoring reduction targets
- Partner with Enterprise ESG team to identify synergies with the GHG accounting tool and how supplier data can help refine American Express Scope 3 emission calculations
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in the implementation roadmap and develop the next wave of priority suppliers to engage (incl. strategies, tactics)
- Actively engage BUs on supplier engagement strategy and serve as a sustainability advocate promoting the inclusion of climate in business decisions and interactions with suppliers
- Stay informed about evolving environmental regulations & industry best practices
Additional:
- Build strong partnership with select strategic suppliers and manage them effectively
- Partner closely and represent GSM with the Enterprise Sustainability Team and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Center of Excellence, and the associated sponsors to represent and establish relationships across the enterprise and externally where requested
- Maintain and promote the Blue Box Values by ensuring that work is delivered to the highest professional, legal, and regulatory standards, and that the activities subject to review/procurement comply with Enterprise business ethics
- Ability to travel 10%
Minimum Requirements:
- Sustainable Procurement – strong general manager, including strategic thinking, financial acumen, and negotiation skills with a deep understanding of market opportunities and broader business issues to be able to capitalize on market changes and future trends. Strong project management skills with a history of successfully implementing sustainability or ESG programs across the supply chain
- In-depth knowledge of sustainability standards, environmental regulations, and industry trends, especially related to Net Zero commitments.
- Certification in sustainability (e.g., Certified Sustainability Professional) is a plus
- Strong proficiency in data management, analysis, and reporting, including expertise in sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., GHG Protocol, CDP)
- At least 2 years of sustainable procurement experience.
- Analytical – results-driven mindset with the ability to synthesize data into actionable insights and strategic recommendations while balancing multiple priorities. In-depth knowledge of sustainability standards, regulations, industry trends, and reporting frameworks (e.g. CDP)
- Comfort with white space – ability to navigate white space and bring structure
- Adaptable – ability to manage day-to-day business priorities along with long-term strategic deliverables with a positive attitude and the flexibility to deal with ambiguity and rapid change
- Strategic thinker – strategic and creative thinker who likes to solve business and operational problems and identify clear action plans and drive resolution
- Customer focus – customer-first mindset with knowledge of procurement/sourcing process
- Strong collaborator – collaborative partner with strong cross-functional leadership and influence management skills with global experience
- Excellent communicator – excellent oral and written communication skills with comfort presenting ideas to leaders at all levels
Salary Range:
$80,000.00 to $155,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
