ESG Control & Reporting Manager

This role is hybrid on-site (3) days a week in Northbrook or Chicago, IL


We are seeking a highly skilled ESG Controller to lead the development and implementation of Financial Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls related to our ESG initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in finance, compliance, and ESG practices, with the ability to design, monitor, and enhance the internal control framework as it pertains to ESG reporting and operations. This role will directly contribute to the integrity, sustainability, and accountability of our company’s ESG commitments.


Responsibilities

SOX Compliance:

  • Develop and implement SOX controls related to ESG reporting and initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and standards regarding ESG data and reporting.
  • Collaborate with finance and compliance teams to align ESG controls with overall financial controls.


ESG Reporting:

  • Oversee the preparation and accuracy of ESG-related financial reports.
  • Participate in the validation and verification processes of ESG data to ensure reliability and transparency.
  • Work with external auditors during ESG-related audits and ensure timely resolution of findings.


Risk Management:

  • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with ESG activities in relation to financial reporting.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and internal control evaluations specific to ESG factors.


Policy Development & Training:

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures related to ESG compliance and reporting.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff on ESG controls and compliance requirements.


Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with various departments including Operations, HR, Legal, and Investor Relations to integrate ESG considerations into business processes.
  • Engage with stakeholders to communicate ESG initiatives and compliance efforts.


Continuous Improvement:

  • Monitor industry trends and regulatory changes related to ESG and SOX compliance to ensure the company remains at the forefront of best practices.
  • Recommend enhancements to internal control processes to strengthen ESG governance.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; MBA or Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in finance, accounting, or compliance roles, with a focus on ESG practices and SOX controls.
  • Strong understanding of ESG frameworks and reporting standards (e.g., GRI, SASB, TCFD).
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing internal controls.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Professional certification (e.g., CPA, CIA, CISA) is a plus.
